Carbohydrates - Friend or Foe?

Low-Carb for Weight loss

All carbs aren’t equal

Carbs get a bad rap these days.

But is that fair?

The word carbohydrates is used for such a wide ranging set of foods that it taints fruit with the same brush as highly processed junk like modern breads, pastas & fast food.

I will be clear and state that no amount of highly processed food is a good thing. 1 bag of crisps (or chips for our american readers) per month or even week is unlikely to have severe adverse effects, but is the juice worth the squeeze? There are only net negatives to these foods.

Fruit on the other hand can be an effective way to recover glycogen stores after a hard workout. Fruit can also be used as a tool to wean a person off a diet high in highly processed foods.

These are just two very basic windows into the muddy world of carbohydrates. However, if you’re goal is weight loss, here are 5 key reasons I believe that you should consider a low carbohydrate diet:

  1. Reduced appetite: Eating fewer carbohydrates can help reduce appetite and cravings, leading to a reduction in calorie intake and weight loss.

  2. Improved insulin sensitivity: Low-carb diets can improve insulin sensitivity, which can help regulate blood sugar levels and reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

  3. Increased fat burning: Low-carb diets can increase the body's fat-burning capacity, leading to greater weight loss.

  4. Reduced water weight: The body stores carbohydrates as glycogen, which holds water. When you eat fewer carbs, your body uses up its glycogen stores and sheds excess water weight.

  5. Lowered triglycerides: Low-carb diets have been shown to reduce levels of triglycerides, a type of fat found in the blood that is associated with an increased risk of heart disease.

Remember, not all carbs are equal, but all carbs should be limited.
